Stability Analysis of the Mode-Locking Dynamics in a Laser Cavity with a Passive Polarizer

چکیده
A low-dimensional model is constructed via a variational formulation which characterizes the mode-locking dynamics in a laser cavity with a passive polarizer. The theoretical model accounts explicitly for the effects of the passive polarizer with a Jones matrix. In combination with the nonlinear interaction of the orthogonally polarized electromagnetic fields, the evolution of the mode-locked state reduces to the nonlinear interaction of the amplitude, width and phase chirp. This model allows for an explicit analytic prediction of the steady-state mode-locked state (fixed point) and its corresponding stability. The stability analysis requires a center manifold reduction which reveals that the solution decays to the mode-locked state on a timescale dependent on the gain bandwidth and the net cavity gain. Quantitative and qualitative agreement is achieved between the full governing model and the low-dimensional model, thus providing for an excellent design tool for characterizing and optimizing mode-locking performance.

Stability calculations for the ytterbium- doped fiber laser passively mode-locked through nonlinear polarization rotation
We investigate theoretically a fiber laser passively mode-locked with nonlinear polarization rotation. A unidirectional ring cavity is considered with a polarizer placed between two sets of a halfwave plate and a quarterwave plate. A master equation is derived and the stability of the continuous and mode-locked solutions is studied. In particular, the effect of the orientation of the four phase...

The stability of two semiconductor lasers that are spatially separated by a passive resonator is analyzed using the composite-cavity mode approach. We study the nonlinear interactions of three composite-cavity modes and identify regions of in-phase and out-of-phase laser locking in the parameter plane of the transmission coefficients of the coupling mirrors and the laser length difference. We consider an Yb-doped double-clad fiber laser in a unidirectional ring cavity containing a polarizer placed between two half-wave plates. Depending on the orientation of the phase plates, the laser operates in continuous, Qswitch, mode-lock or unstable self-pulsing regime. An experimental study of the stability of the mode locking regime is realized versus the orientation of the half-wave pla...

We demonstrate the generation of sub-picosecond optical pulses using a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and a linear polarizer placed in a ring-laser configuration. Nonlinear polarization rotation in the SOA serves as the passive mode-locking mechanism. The ring cavity generates pulses with duration below 800 fs (FWHM) at a repetition rate of 14 MHz. The time -bandwidth product is 0.48. Si...
متن کاملA novel mode-locked ring laser based on polarization saturation in a semiconductor optical amplifier
Recently, in our group 800 fs optical pulses were generated in a mode-locked ring laser operated by polarization saturation in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). We investigate numerically the generation of sub-picosecond optical pulses in such a configuration, consisting of a SOA and a linear polarizer placed in a ring. Polarization saturation in the SOA takes the role of a saturable abs...
